Dynaflodrill

Dynaflodrill is a unique software application for underbalanced drilling (UBD) engineering. The physical and mathematical basis of Dynaflodrill enables the user to investigate a wide variety of problems (both static and dynamic) related to UBD operations. Dynaflodrill is based on the extensive R&D effort over decades within multiphase well-flow conducted by Petec and RF - Rogaland Research.

Key features

  • UBD either with or without gas injection
  • Definition of optimum operation parameters
  • Evaluation of different engineering methods
  • Detailed investigation of dynamic effects
  • Develop/check operational procedures (start/stop pump, pipe connections, tripping)
  • Post job analysis
  • Personnel training

Dynaflodrill is designed to simulate and design UBD operations. The mathematical and physical models are formulated in a way that enables the user to evaluate different realistic scenarios in the simulator. Both the steady-state mode and the dynamic mode utilise an accurate multiphase flow model that can handle the combination of injected and produced fluids as well as drilling mud. Dynaflodrill is suitable for both the UBD with gas injection, either from drill pipe or from annulus, and UBD without gas injection.

The combination of the dynamic and steady-state modes is to satisfy the user's needs for both rapid design and detailed analysis of how to achieve the optimum solutions. The steady-state mode rapidly scans a range of combinations of operational parameters and defines the usable regime which satisfies all the UBD design criteria. The dynamic mode deals with the transient effects and it is utilised to identify the potential problems with operational procedures with simulating the realistic operational process, which is critical to ensure the success of UBD. The dynamic simulator also provides the drilling industry with a unique tool for training personnel involved or in charge of UBD operations.
