Manage wellbore pressures

With more challenging wells, narrower margins between pore and fracture pressure and attempts to apply more sophisticated drilling and control techniques, it is crucial to understand the dynamic hydraulic effects in the wellbore.

Knowing the impact of operational changes and what responses one should expect from the wellbore is important in optimizing design, in planning and managing operations, and in any form of real-time control application.

Dynamic hydraulic effects in the wellbore
The combination of accurate modeling, graphical presentation of results and sensitivity studies, as well as the ability to simulate “look-ahead”, is of special importance whenever the design margins decrease. It is well known that in advanced wells like HPHT wells, deep water wells, extended reach wells, wells in depleted reservoirs or wells in areas with gas or water injection, the margins between pore pressure and fracture pressure may be small. In the future, the drilling targets will be even more difficult. Drilling advanced and complicated wells requires an extra planning effort.
